The 2017 MBA Golf team is seeking a win this year at the State Championship after finishing second place in last year’s state championship. The team, led by a strong senior class consisting of Jack Crawford, Alex McClellan, Haynes Lynch, Josh Morris, and Manny Rogers, hopes to leave their mark on MBA Golf history.
Coach Sean Jackson likes his team’s chances this year. “We have a good mixture of experience with five seniors looking to contribute and some promising underclassmen,” said Jackson.
The team’s underclassmen include Bradford Cummins, only 8th grader on the varsity team. As Coach Jackson alluded to, the team has a strong group of players returning to compete this year, but also has plenty of young players that will help them to continue competing in years to come.
Obviously the runner-up at the state championship has served as motivation as the Big Red look towards the upcoming season. Coach Jackson said, “Last year, we finished State Runner-Up, and with four returning starters, expectations are high”. The team appears talented enough to be a frontrunner for state this year, and their incredible depth is the primary reason that the golf team can continue to compete year in and year out.
Jackson spoke about the depth saying, “Like the last several years, we have extraordinary depth for a high school team. If matches recorded the top eight scores we would be a runaway favorite for the State Championship; however, only the top 4 scores matter.”
The Big Red still have great depth in the top 4 and should be one of the toughest opponents for any golf team in Tennessee. Coach Jackson and the entire team is looking forward to seeing the competition within the group of golfers because of their incredible depth.“Our depth should provide good competition throughout the year, which hopefully will keep our guys sharp during the season.” Almost all coaches view competition as beneficial to their team because it pushes players to play their best every day.
The season is off to a hot start after matches began in early August. The team began the season with a convincing win over Lipscomb Academy 153-168. After the win against Lipscomb, the team went on to beat Ensworth 13.5 - 7.5 to win the Daily Cup. In the Ensworth match, seniors Manny Rogers, Jack Crawford, and Josh Morris helped the team get the win. MBA then went onto the Baylor Preview and beat rivals Ensworth and Brentwood Academy to finish eighth out of twelve teams in the competition. Junior, William Davis, led the way shooting a 79.
MBA has a long road to the State Competition on October 10th, but the coaches, the fans, and most importantly, the players feel confident about their chances at bringing home the title.
